What causes painful or irritated eyes?

There can be many different causes of painful, irritated, itchy, gritty, stinging or burning eyes. Your eyes will be examined by our doctors to ascertain exactly what the cause is and treatment will be tailored to your particular situation.

Some conditions need urgent treatment to prevent loss of vision, and others are chronic conditions requiring ongoing treatment.

Some examples are:

Uveitis or iritis is an inflammation of the coloured part of the eye. It usually requires urgent treatment, and delay can damage the vision permanently.

Viral conjunctivitis can be very contagious. Treatment can improve comfort greatly.

Foreign bodies in the eye need prompt removal followed by antibiotic drops.

Corneal ulcers need urgent medical treatment to prevent scarring and permanent loss of vision. If you have a previous history of a coldsore ( herpes simplex ) in the eye you need to be seen very promptly, as this may have recurred and antiviral medications can be given.

Blepharitis is a chronic inflammation of the eyelid margins and lashes. It often causes stinging, burning eyes, redness and crusting. Long-term treatment generally keeps the patient comfortable, but additional treatment may be need for acute exacerbations and complications associated with the condition.

Dry eyes may be caused by insufficient quantities of tears or poor quality tears. It occurs more commonly with age, is more common in women and may be related to wind, smoke, air conditioning and various medical conditions.
