Cataract Surgery
During cataract surgery, the natural lens in the eye is removed and is replaced with an artificial lens. This sits inside the eye permanently and restores the focusing power. There are various techniques used for cataract surgery, and different techniques are used for different situations. Prior to the surgery various alternatives will be discussed.
Generally, the surgery is done under local anaesthetic with some sedation. There is an anaesthetist present to ensure that the patient is comfortable and for patient safety. Afterwards the patient can go home and is seen the following day by the doctor. At this visit, the pad is removed and drops are commenced. Drops will be continued for about a month.
The intraocular lenses come in many different powers, and measurements are taken of the various parts of the eye. These are used to calculate the desired power for each patient. These lenses may correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Sometimes it is necessary to arrange a custom-made lens if a patient has an unusual eye. Patients have different expectations and requests regarding the final result and this will be discussed with you prior to the surgery. Our priority is for the patient to make an informed decision.
Laser cataract surgery: A special type of laser called the femtosecond laser can be used to perform some of the initial steps in cataract surgery. This includes some of the cuts normally done manually and softening of a dense cataract. This can be helpful in particularly difficult cataracts, but is not necessarily helpful in all, nor does it necessarily give a better result in every situation. Our doctors will discuss with you what the most appropriate type of procedure is for your situation.
Generally, the outcome of cataract surgery is very good, but as with all surgery complications can occur. These include inflammation, infection, dislocated lens and pressure rises. This will be discussed with you prior to the surgery.
Glaucoma Treatment
Glaucoma is treated by lowering intraocular pressure. Treatment options include prescription eye drops, oral medicines, laser treatment, surgery or a combination of approaches.
Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery
While the first line of treatment for glaucoma is usually drops, sometimes surgery is required. Glaucoma surgery previously has been associated with an increase in complications and risk. In recent years minimally invasive glaucoma surgery has been used at the time of cataract surgery to lower the pressure further. In this procedure small devices may be inserted into the trabecular meshwork to provide further drainage.
How each laser works in a particular situation will be discussed with you prior to the procedure, and you will be given the opportunity to ask questions.

Laser Procedures
There are various different types of lasers, and these lasers work in different ways. Some examples of laser procedures include:
The femtosecond laser can be used in dense or difficult cataracts to soften the cataract and replace some of the initial steps in cataract surgery. This can be helpful in particularly difficult cataracts, but is not necessarily helpful in all, nor does it necessarily give a better result in every situation.
A laser capsulotomy can be used for posterior capsule opacification. In this situation cloudy vision which occurs following cataract surgery, due to thickening of the capsular bag which held the original cataract and now hold the implant.
A selective laser trabeculoplasty can be used in glaucoma to improve drainage of fluid from the eye and lower intraocular pressure.
A laser iridotomy can be done in patients with narrow angles the laser can be used to create a safety valve and prevent sudden rises in pressure.
Laser is used in various retinal conditions. It can be used to seal the area around retinal tears and holes so that fluid does not get in behind the retina and cause retinal detachment. It can be used in diabetic retinopathy to seal off leaking blood vessels, or to redirect the blood supply.
Minor Procedures
Minor procedures such as removal of cysts in the eyelids, growths on the eyelids and procedures for watery eyes are performed in the rooms in our specially designed minor procedure room. We strictly adhere to international standards of infection control.
First Visit
Your appointment may take at least 90 minutes. After entering your details into the system at reception, you will be seen first by one of our orthoptists who will do some preliminary testing before seeing the doctor.
A medical history is taken, the vision is tested and the front part of the eyes is examined. Anaesthetic drops are used to check the ocular pressures.
You will then have dilating drops put into your eyes so that it is possible to examine the back of your eyes. These drops may take up to half an hour to work, and may blur your vision up to 2 hrs after the visit, please be aware that as vision may be blurred, you may not be able to drive home for several hours. We suggest bringing sunglasses to help with the glare.
Sometimes additional diagnostic tests are needed and these may incur extra costs. This will be explained to you in full detail.
What to bring with you…
Our doctors are specialist ophthalmologists, and so you will need a referral letter for your appointment. Your local doctor/general practitioner or optometrist can give you this. This will give our doctors information about your past eye health and any medical conditions that may affect your eye health. This will also enable you to claim a rebate from Medicare Australia.
Please bring the following items with you where applicable:
- current glasses
- a list of current medications
- if wearing contact lenses to the appointment, bring a case to put your contact lenses in
- Sunglasses (for glare)
- Referral from local doctor/general practitioner or an optometrist
- Medicare card and pension card
